Driving change in energy: SmartestEnergy Business’ commitment to gender equality
SmartestEnergy Business is amplifying its commitment to gender equality and the advancement of women in the utilities through a series of impactful International Women's Day initiatives.
By facilitating engaging discussions and sharing valuable insights, we’re working to "accelerate action" and promote positive change within the energy sector.
Celebrating women in trading
On the 6th March, SmartestEnergy Business proudly partnered with the Women's Utilities Network (WUN) to host "Women Shaping the Future of Energy" - a panel discussion and networking event dedicated to championing women in trading and commercial roles. Aligning with this year's International Women's Day theme, Accelerate Action, the event provided a dynamic platform for professionals to share their experiences, insights, and perspectives on driving change in the industry.
Our expert panel, featuring accomplished women from energy trading and commercial roles, delivered compelling messages on fostering inclusive cultures and the vital role of mentorship. By connecting professionals and encouraging the uptake of women in the energy sector, we reinforced our commitment to building a more diverse and inclusive industry.
"Driving change in the energy sector starts with empowering more women to lead the way. By fostering diversity, sharing knowledge, and creating opportunities, we can build a more inclusive and dynamic industry - one where women thrive, innovate, and shape the future of energy." – Louise Wapshare
A special thank you to our inspiring panelists, whose invaluable contributions made the event a resounding success:

How Does Unconscious Bias Shape Workplace Culture?
Darren Jeffery, Head of Operations, joined WUN's podcast as a key speaker to discuss key findings on unconscious bias in the utilities sector. This included the high rate of women considering leaving the industry, the importance of inclusive workplace cultures, and how psychological safety drives innovation and retention.
During the discussion, Darren Jeffery shared personal learning experiences about unconscious bias in leadership. He also emphasised the critical role of male allies in supporting workplace inclusion, highlighting that leadership must take a proactive approach. Darren stressed the importance of creating space for every voice to be heard. Also reinforcing that this kind of cultural shift must come from the top down, with leaders actively engaging in networks like WUN and continuously educating themselves on diversity and inclusion.
"When you're in those situations, taking more time, reflecting, and ensuring that everybody has had a voice, or at least if they haven't, asking why. Because that just opens up those honest conversations."
We are proud to play our part in accelerating action towards gender equality and empowering women to shape the future of energy. As a growing community, we can make the system fairer and more powerful for all.
