The SmartestEnergy journey: 13 years of growth

As part of our 25th anniversary celebrations, we’re spotlighting the stories of colleagues who’ve helped shape our success. In this feature, Lauren Barrows, Head of Portfolio Management, reflects on her 13-year career with SmartestEnergy. From joining as a graduate with no industry experience to leading our growing renewables trading and portfolio management team.

When I graduated, I had three job offers lined up, all in accounting. I chose SmartestEnergy because it was based in London, and for a recent graduate, that was an exciting opportunity. Shortly after I joined, I took a day off for my graduation ceremony, and just six months later my manager went on paternity leave for three months. I suddenly found myself responsible for managing the ROC P&L. It was a steep learning curve, but one that provided invaluable experience and confidence early in my career.

What has kept me here over the years is the “we’re all in this together” culture. Challenges are shared, ideas are encouraged, and people are trusted to deliver. When you work alongside the right people, it makes all the difference.

Growing with the company

The biggest change I have seen over the years is the scale of growth. When I started, we were a small team. Now, the renewables trading and portfolio function alone has grown from two people to thirteen.

The culture has naturally evolved, particularly after Covid, as we adapted how we worked and connected. However, one thing that has remained constant is the sense of ownership people take. I’m still very much the “go-to” person for certain things, and that responsibility is something I’ve always valued.

I also have fond memories of the early days. From team socials at the pub after work to our 2016 Quarterly Business Review at London Zoo. Those moments remind me of the strong sense of camaraderie that has always been part of SmartestEnergy.

Finding my path in trading

Transitioning from finance into trading was a defining moment in my career. I joined the trading team in August 2017, and it’s where I’ve experienced my greatest professional growth.

From tracking renewable P&L and optimising positions to identifying opportunities for market premiums, I’ve always enjoyed the analytical and strategic aspects of the role. I’m also proud to have supported initiatives such as Women in Trading, which are driving greater diversity and balance across the industry.

Opportunities to grow and lead

SmartestEnergy has always invested in its people, and I’ve benefited from that commitment. Early in my career, the company funded my ACCA qualification and provided study leave, which made a significant difference. Beyond that, I’ve been trusted to make decisions, take accountability, and learn through experience. That trust has shaped me as a manager and a leader.

Today, I lead a talented team that includes two apprentices, and it’s rewarding to see them develop their skills and confidence. Working here has also helped me grow personally. I used to rely on others to confirm my answers; now I trust my own judgment and have the confidence to speak up.

Looking ahead

The energy industry continues to evolve at pace, with new regulation, increasing complexity, and the growth of intelligent, data-driven markets. This constant change is what makes the trading environment so dynamic and exciting.

Looking forward, one of the key challenges will be balancing ambition with practicality, achieving sustainability goals while maintaining profitability. I’m fortunate to work with a team of highly capable and curious people who ask the right questions and adapt quickly. That mindset is what keeps us learning, improving, and staying ahead of the curve.
