The SmartestEnergy Journey: From London to New York

I joined SmartestEnergy UK in June 2014. At the time, the Credit team was looking for someone who could manage credit risk while also supporting communication with our Tokyo office. As a native Japanese speaker, the opportunity to work across regions and cultures immediately appealed to me.

Although I was new to credit risk, the company recognised my potential and provided the support, training, and tools I needed to grow. From the beginning, I felt that SmartestEnergy valued ability, attitude, and the willingness to learn, qualities that still define the organisation today.

When I later relocated to the United States, I was given the opportunity to return to SmartestEnergy in a new role. Rejoining a company whose values, collaboration, and purpose had already made such a strong impression on me felt both familiar and energising.

How the business has evolved

When I first joined, SmartestEnergy UK was a close-knit organisation with fewer than one hundred employees. In the years since, we’ve evolved into a global energy business operating across several key markets.

The growth has been significant, not just in scale, but in the diversity, professionalism, and expertise across the business. One of SmartestEnergy’s greatest strengths is its culture. It is an environment that encourages learning, accountability, and teamwork, where people are empowered to take initiative and continuously develop.

Even as we’ve expanded, the company’s investment in its people has remained constant. That consistency is one of the reasons my journey with SmartestEnergy has been so rewarding.

Since joining the U.S. team, I’ve seen how the same core principles that shaped our success in the UK have taken root in the US as well. The growth of SmartestEnergy US has been remarkable, driven by a talented and dedicated team with a strong sense of purpose.

Starting from a small foundation, the team has built trusted relationships with our customers and partners in a highly competitive market. Every individual contribution has played a part in this progress, reflecting the company’s commitment to collaboration, expertise, and excellence.
