At SmartestEnergy, our purpose has always been clear: to help customers navigate the energy transition with confidence. As energy markets evolve and customer needs become more complex, scale and expertise matter more than ever.

That’s why I’m proud to share an important milestone in our journey that significantly strengthens our global footprint and enhances the capabilities of the SmartestEnergy Group.

SmartestEnergy has acquired a majority shareholding in Factorenergia, a leading independent energy supplier headquartered in Barcelona. This marks a pivotal step forward in our international growth strategy, expanding our presence into Iberia and Latin America.

A stronger global platform

Over the past 25 years, SmartestEnergy has grown from a UK-based energy business into a global energy company with operations across the UK, the US and Australia, supported by deep trading and risk management expertise across international markets. With the backing of our parent company, Marubeni Corporation, we have been able to invest consistently in capability, people and infrastructure to support long-term, sustainable growth.

The acquisition of Factorenergia extends this even further. It establishes a strong operational base in Iberia and strengthens our reach into Latin America; regions that are playing an increasingly important role in the global energy transition. Together, SmartestEnergy and Factorenergia create a more diversified, resilient platform with the scale and reach to support customers across Spain, Portugal, México, Chile and Brazil.

Complementary strengths, shared values

What makes this partnership particularly powerful is the strong strategic alignment between our two businesses. Factorenergia brings deep retail market expertise in Spain and Portugal, alongside a proven track record of innovation and customer-focused service. Founded in 1999, it was the first independent supplier to operate in Spain’s liberalised electricity market and today serves more than 300,000 household and business customers.

Its capabilities span electricity and gas supply, alongside an expanding suite of energy transition solutions including solar installations, battery storage and electric vehicle charging. These strengths complement SmartestEnergy’s international trading capability and long-standing expertise in serving large commercial and industrial customers.

Just as importantly, we share a common mindset: a customer-first approach, a commitment to transparency, and a focus on delivering practical solutions that help customers move toward net zero at their own pace.

Enhancing capability at scale

By bringing these strengths together, we are building a platform that enables us to scale across new segments and territories while maintaining operational continuity and service quality. Factorenergia will continue to operate under its established brand and leadership, ensuring stability for customers and partners, while benefiting from SmartestEnergy’s global reach and Marubeni’s financial strength and international presence.

Founder and CEO Emilio Rousaud will remain in his role as Factorenergia’s CEO and will also join the SmartestEnergy Group Executive Committee, reinforcing collaboration and knowledge-sharing across the Group. This governance structure reflects our belief that long-term value is created by empowering strong local leadership within a global framework.

Looking ahead

This acquisition is a foundation for what comes next. With enhanced geographic reach, broader capabilities and a commitment to supporting the energy transition, SmartestEnergy is well positioned to continue growing responsibly and sustainably.

As energy systems become more interconnected and customer expectations continue to rise, our ability to combine local market expertise with global scale will be a defining strength. I’m excited about the opportunities ahead and confident that, together with Factorenergia and with the backing of Marubeni, SmartestEnergy will continue to go from strength to strength globally.
