Marubeni founded by Chubei Itoh (1842-1903) when, age 15, he began business trips to deal in linen cloth.  

Marubeni Corporation incorporated, and the following year listed shares on the Osaka Securities Exchange and Tokyo Stock Exchange.  

Marubeni acquired a stake in SmartestEnergy Limited, adding an asset-light renewable energy company to its portfolio. 

SmartestEnergy Limited entered the UK supply market, powering large businesses and Commercial and Industrial customers with renewable energy. 

We acquired our UK SME supply business, SmartestEnergy Business, and SmartestEnergy US LLC launched, opening our first international office in Syracuse, New York  

SmartestEnergy entered the Australian supply market, opening our second international office in Sydney, Australia.
